Extra-Depth Footwear in DFW
When your feet need more room vertically, a standard shoe may simply not be enough.
Extra-depth footwear provides additional space inside the shoe to accommodate orthotics, foot deformities, swelling, hammertoes, bunions, AFOs and other conditions that make conventional footwear difficult to wear comfortably.
At Foot-Fit Expert, I help clients throughout the DFW area find footwear that provides the right combination of depth, width, support and overall fit.
More Room Where You Actually Need It
Extra-depth footwear isn't simply a larger shoe.
A shoe can be wide enough across the foot but still lack the vertical space needed over the toes or instep. That can create pressure, rubbing, discomfort and difficulty getting the foot properly positioned.
Depending on your needs, extra-depth footwear can provide additional room for:
-
Custom or prefabricated orthotics
-
AFOs and other bracing
-
Hammertoes and prominent toes
-
Swollen feet
-
Bunions and other areas of prominence
-
Higher insteps
-
Diabetic and neuropathic feet
-
Foot deformities
-
Multiple layers of socks or therapeutic socks
The goal is not simply to make the shoe bigger. The goal is to create usable space while maintaining appropriate support and stability.
Who May Benefit From Extra-Depth Footwear?
Extra-depth footwear can be especially helpful if you have difficulty finding shoes that comfortably accommodate the shape or volume of your feet.
You may benefit if:
You Wear Orthotics
Orthotics take up space inside the shoe. A shoe with additional depth can provide the room necessary for the foot, orthotic and shoe to work together without creating excessive pressure.
You Have Hammertoes or Prominent Toes
If your toes sit higher than normal, the top of a conventional shoe can rub against them. Additional vertical space can reduce pressure over the toes.
Your Feet Swell
Foot volume can change throughout the day. Extra-depth footwear can provide additional room when swelling makes your normal shoes feel tight.
You Have Diabetes or Neuropathy
Proper footwear fit is particularly important when sensation is reduced or the feet are vulnerable to pressure and friction. Extra-depth designs can help create a more accommodating fit when appropriate.
You Wear an AFO or Brace
Some extra-depth footwear is designed to accommodate braces and other orthotic devices that cannot fit comfortably inside conventional shoes.
You Have Hard to Fit Feet
Sometimes the problem isn't simply that your feet are "wide." You may need more room in specific areas of the shoe because of foot shape, volume or an orthotic device.
Extra Depth vs. Extra Wide: What's the Difference?
These two terms are often confused.
Extra-wide footwear provides more room from side to side.
Extra-depth footwear provides more vertical space inside the shoe.
Some people need one. Others need both.
For example, someone with a wide forefoot and a high instep may require both extra width and extra depth. Someone with a narrow heel but prominent hammertoes may need additional depth without simply going into a wider shoe.
That's why simply sizing up isn't always the right solution.
A larger shoe may become too long while still failing to provide the right amount of room where you actually need it.
Extra-Depth Footwear for Orthotics
One of the most common reasons people need extra-depth footwear is to accommodate an orthotic.
Your shoe needs room for both the orthotic and your foot.
Depending on the shoe and orthotic combination, useful features may include:
-
Removable insoles
-
Increased interior volume
-
Extra-depth construction
-
Wider fitting options
-
Adjustable closures
-
Stable heel counters
The shoe still needs to fit your foot properly after the orthotic is installed.
Extra-Depth Footwear for Diabetic & Sensitive Feet
Many of the footwear options I provide are designed with diabetic and sensitive feet in mind.
Features may include:
-
Extra interior depth
-
Seam-minimized interiors
-
Protective uppers
-
Adjustable closures
-
Multiple width options
-
Removable insoles
-
Orthotic accommodation
-
Protective cushioning
Not every shoe is appropriate for every foot. Your individual foot shape, sensation, activity level and footwear needs should be considered when selecting footwear.
Extra-Depth Footwear for AFOs & Bracing
AFOs and other braces can make finding everyday footwear particularly challenging.
The shoe must have enough interior volume to accommodate the device while still providing appropriate stability and security.
Depending on the brace and your needs, I can help identify footwear options with features such as:
-
Extra depth
-
Removable footbeds
-
Wider openings
-
Adjustable closures
-
Increased interior volume
-
Compatible sole and upper construction
Bring your brace to your appointment whenever possible so footwear can be evaluated with the device you actually wear.
